Irish Setters

History

Our breeding of Irish Setters is based on North American bloodlines and we are lucky to build on the longstanding work done by breeders in the States.

We got our first Irish Setter pup in 1981 in Finland. Our first American bred Irish were a Liafail dog "Jasu" and a Kimberlin dog "Retu", bred by Claire Andrews. Both boys were born in 1988.

During those years we learnt to appreciate the work of the American breeders who focused on a balanced and elegant conformation, lively movement, nice temperaments and good health. Across the Atlantic, we found lots of sound and balanced but stylish Irish Setters, with nice coat, good bone, nice front and rear angulation and large movement with good reach and drive. Irish Setter is a breed which is meant to move. We also found lovely and soft temperaments combined with the typical happy and rollicking Irish personalities. And we do appreciate the attention given to the health of the Irish Setters in breeding programs. We do not hunt birds ourselves but rather enjoy observing them. However it is good to see how birdy the bloodlines of this pointing breed remain, even if most Irish are today bred to become companion dogs.

At the annual Irish Setter National Show in Oklahoma City in May 2011, birds took the liberty of landing right in the show rings. Every single Irish that we saw reacted to the birds. This did not make the handlers' job too easy. In a Finnish dog show 2015, one of our young Irish kept pointing a hair ball, brought by the wind right into the show ring from a neighbouring Afghan show site.

All our family members grew up with dogs, but currently our time and effort is overtaken by Red Irish Setters. However we do keep an eye on other breeds, especially Springer Spaniels in the show rings, whenever we can.

We are members of the Finnish Kennel Club and the Irish Setter Club of America.

Our foundation Irish Setter bitch, Morrigan in Northern Lights , Silkki, is bred by experienced judge-breeders Margaret and Robert McKay in the States. Silkki's dam is their beautiful multiple winning girl, AmCh Morrigan's Red Skye at Night. Silkki's sire is AmCh Courtwood Innkeeper, a dog known for his impressive movement. He was bred by Susan Hahnen, whose Courtwood bloodlines are part of the ancestry of our Irish, and hopefully also part of our future breeding.

Our long-time family member Liafail Pegasus, Roihu, is the sire of Sametti and the Ocean litter. He was bred by Dr. Mac and Sylvie McCrory, together with the experienced judge-breeder Susan Griffiths of Kerry-Eire. Roihu's dam was the elegant AmCh Kerry-Eire Liafail Fandango, and his sire was Halsey Rebel Yell, bred by Mrs. Anna Rathman in Florida. It was with Mac and Sylvie we started to go to dog shows in the States in the eighties. We keep working with Sue Griffiths whose Kerry-Eire dogs remain firm part of our current breeding.

We commend our breeder friends in the States for the longstanding work they have done for the breed, and we are grateful for all their help in supporting our efforts in Europe. Without them we would not have been able breed Irish setters in Finland with the bloodlines we love.
